There are many genres when it comes to reading and writing, generally they fall under two main categories though, Non-Fiction-as in it really happened, or Fiction-it is made up. Each of these forms of writing have their merits. Non-Fiction can be instructional, and interesting, because you know it actually happened. Fiction on the other hand, opens the door to the imagination and allows the reader to better explore new possibilities. Take Science Fiction for example. Throughout history, what was once considered Science Fiction, has become science fact in many cases. Fiction writers have come up with new ideas on how science might be able to be applied, and used those ideas in their writing, this is helped by the fact that many good Science Fiction writers include actual science theory in their work, so as to make the fantastic more believable, and as science has progressed and continued to explore what we can do, it sometimes finds that some of those fictional ideas are actually possible. Take Star Trek for example. Sure we don’t have a lot of things they have in the movies, like photon torpedoes, or an interstellar space fleet, but it is easy to see a connection between the Star Trek recorder, and our modern day cell phones, in fact our cell phones would probably put a recorder to shame at this point, except in being able to have service nearly anywhere, still working on that. Besides helping us to explore the possibilities of science, and worlds beyond our own, Fiction also serves as an escape from the stresses of our day to day lives, rather than read about some other real world problems that could be ours, we instead see problems that we are likely never to face, and characters that we can go along for the ride with, hoping they make it to the end, because they might not, or they might pull something off and come out victorious. Fiction, while not real, has an interesting potential to also help us explore truth, moral and otherwise. A made up story has a way of telling a deeper truth through its characters than reality sometimes can, and we can get an idea of how a situation might play out without having to make it actually happen. These are just a few reasons why Fiction is something great to take part in, and I encourage you to pick up a book and read, it can honestly be as good or better than television.
